The Swoop of Cranes is a community art and city beautification project.
Citizens and businesses can sponsor a 5 foot steel crane silhouette that will be changed from a steel blank to an artist's creative rendition. The completed rendition will be attached to light poles in town from March through August.
Our goal: 50-60 completed cranes on display on light poles in Monte Vista's City Center. This will attract attention during summer tourism season. Generate interest and excitement in Monte Vista!

The Swoop of the Cranes is a community art project celebrating our Sandhill Cranes and showcasing the extraordinary talent of our local artists. Our goal is for travelers to stop and take notice. We hope they will park, stroll the streets, spending time and money in Monte and enjoying the Artists' creations.
The Cranes will be on display from March to September. Sponsors or artists will have the option of purchasing their Cranes for $100 before the auction. In September, the remaining Cranes will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Proceeds of the auction will be used for beautification projects in Monte Vista. Funds may be used for planting trees, hanging flower baskets, and other storefront improvement programs.
You may select an artist from our list, or you may choose a local artist yourself.

Monte Vista’s Swoop of Cranes - Deadlines & Details Downloadable Deadlines & Details
You’ve sponsored a Crane Silhouette. Thank you very much! You have just stepped up to help beautify Monte Vista, increase interest in our city, and once displayed your contribution will attract more tourist attention!
Art Completion and Submission Deadline: February 25, 2022. We need them in hand so we can work with the City crews in getting them put up in the right places and in time for Crane Fest in early March. If they are not returned by this date, they may not be hung.
Silhouettes are 2 cranes standing together made of 12-gauge steel, about 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. The steel is likely to have some residual oil on it from the cutting process which will need to be cleaned off in preparation for the artist’s rendition. There will be brackets on the back for attaching to the LED light poles in the Monte Vista City Center.
Artists may elect to render both the front and the back of the silhouette with the understanding that the back of the silhouette will be attached to the light poles and therefore will be partially covered. We request that if the artist does not wish to render the back of the silhouette, please paint the back a flat black color.
Completed silhouettes will be on display on the light poles in Monte Vista from March thru August (6 months). Durability of color and creative renditions is therefore of great importance. Completed works will need to be clear coated with a protective finish. Keep in mind the potential damaging impact of wind, rain, snow, and our high-altitude UV. Aside from the foregoing cautions, it is up to the artist to decide what type of media/material is applied in the silhouette creation (painted, welded, mosaics, tiled, or even cloisonné? be creative!). The Chamber of Commerce does reserve the right to not put on display any silhouette that it determines may be inappropriate.
The Chamber of Commerce will provide $50 per silhouette to artists to help defray the cost of materials. The Chamber acknowledges that this won’t adequately cover the artist’s expenses and dedication of time involved. We encourage sponsors to work directly with the artist providing their sponsored silhouette in helping to cover additional costs.
Voting by citizens and guests will be conducted to determine the top three cranes. While these are mainly for recognition, the winners will receive $100 per Award to be given to the top three artists!
Sponsors will be granted first dibs and may “buy back” their sponsored silhouette for $75. Otherwise, the silhouettes will be auctioned. Money raised from the Monte Vista Swoop of Cranes
auction shall be used for planting trees, hanging flower baskets, and other storefront improvement programs
