The Swoop of Cranes is entering its sixth year!
The Swoop of the Cranes is a community art project celebrating our Sandhill Cranes and showcasing the extraordinary talent of our local artists.
Purpose of the project
To help beautify Monte Vista, increase interest in our city, and attract more tourist attention!
What does it mean to sponsor a crane?
In support of the project, a crane or cranes can be sponsored for $200 each. This does not reflect ownership of the completed crane, simply participation in the project. However, an additional $75 “buy back” represents ownership of the crane at the completion of the project. This fee can be paid with sponsorship or when the cranes come down toward the end of August.
How are artists selected?
Sponsors can find their own artists, or the Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce can help find an artist. It is up to the artist and sponsor to decide what type of media/material is applied in the silhouette creation (painted, welded, mosaics, tiled, be creative!). The Chamber of Commerce reserves the right not to display any silhouette that it determines may be inappropriate.
Weather protection of the cranes
Completed silhouettes will be on display on the light poles in Monte Vista from March thru August (6 months). Durability of color and creative renditions is therefore of great importance. Completed works will need to be clear coated with a protective finish. Keep in mind the potential damaging impact of wind, rain, snow, and our high-altitude UV.
Taking care of those awesome artists!
It is hoped that sponsors will help support their artists for their time and material costs. The Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce will also provide $85 to the artists after the completion of each crane.
How can I own one of these completed cranes?
The Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce owns a copyright of the crane silhouette used for the project so by far the best way to own a crane is to sponsor and crane and use the “buy back” option. The other option is to bid on one of the cranes that goes to auction in September.

By the way, wonder why we call it a Crane Swoop? There are packs of wolves, herds of elk, gaggles of geese. A large group of cranes are a swoop! Please join us in this fun project!
Turn the crane on the left into a beautiful art work like the crane on the right. Get creative! COMPLETED CRANES MUST BE RETURNED TO THE CHAMBER BY FEBRUARY 19TH - THANKS! |

Monte Vista’s Swoop of the Cranes Deadlines & Details
You’ve sponsored a Crane Silhouette. Thank you very much! You have just stepped up to help beautify Monte Vista, increase interest in our city, and once displayed your contribution will attract more tourist attention!
As a sponsor you are responsible for selecting/communicating with your artist. You may select an artist from our list, or you may choose an artist yourself. The Chamber of Commerce will provide $85 per silhouette to artists to help defray the cost of materials. The Chamber acknowledges that this won’t adequately cover the artist’s expenses and dedication of time involved. We encourage sponsors to work directly with the artist they commissioned in helping to cover additional costs.
Crane Silhouette Sponsor Pick-Up Deadline: January 13th, 2025. Sponsors must pick up their blank crane silhouette by the end of January 13th, 2024, as they will no longer be available to sponsor after this date.
Art Completion and Submission Deadline: February 19th, 2025. We need them in hand so we can work with the City crews in getting them put up in the right places and in time for Crane Fest in early March. If they are not returned by this date, they will not be hung.
Silhouettes are 2 cranes standing together made of 12-gauge steel, about 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. The steel is likely to have some residual oil on it from the cutting process which will need to be cleaned off in preparation for the artist’s rendition. There will be brackets on the back for attaching to the LED light poles in the Monte Vista City Center.
Artists may elect to render both the front and the back of the silhouette with the understanding that the back of the silhouette will be attached to the light poles and therefore will be partially covered. We request that if the artist does not wish to render the back of the silhouette, please paint the back a flat black color.

Completed works will need to be clear coated with a protective finish. Keep in mind the potential damaging impact of wind, rain, snow, and our high-altitude UV. Aside from the foregoing cautions, it is up to the artist to decide what type of media/material is applied in the silhouette creation (painted, welded, mosaics, tiled, or even cloisonné? be creative!). The Chamber of Commerce reserves the right not to display any silhouette that it determines may be inappropriate.
Sponsors will be granted first dibs to purchase their sponsored silhouette for $75. Otherwise, the silhouettes will be auctioned. Money raised from the Monte Vista Swoop of Cranes auction shall be used for Monte Vista beautification projects.
