Our Mission
Listening first, LOR works with rural communities in the Mountain West to enhance livability and prosperity while preserving the character that makes each community unique.
Where We Work
Today, we are working with residents and organizations in Cortez and Monte Vista, Colorado; Lander, Wyoming; Libby, Montana, and Questa and Taos, New Mexico.
Our work is place-based and driven by a community’s vision for its future. With offices across the Mountain West, our local roots help us elevate the rural voice and improve quality of life across the region.
What We Do
We support projects that can have an immediate impact because we believe that many small actions can create lasting change. Our work focuses on solutions that improve quality of life across a broad range of issues—the economy, education, engagement, the environment, health, housing, transportation, and water.
LOR hires local community officers to regularly engage with residents who have ideas for how to improve their towns. Then, LOR helps turn those ideas into action with funding and other resources. We work with individuals, local government, nonprofits, businesses, and other organizations to advance projects, policies, and collaborations that benefit rural communities.

We are proud to be the second oldest electric cooperative in Colorado. We serve the counties of Rio Grande, Costilla, Saguache, Alamosa, Conejos, Mineral and Hinsdale. More than 7,500 member owners work with our team for power in their homes, schools, farms and other small businesses. SLV REC focuses on community involvement through youth camps, scholarships, safety programs and community partnerships, and of course, providing infrastructure and electrical services, including fiber and broadband, to rural Colorado. With the recent passing of former REC lineman, Martin Christensen, SLV REC Board of Directors voted to name the lineworker scholarship in his honor. The Martin Christensen Memorial Lineworker Scholarship is valued at $4,000 and covers tuition costs for one Valley student at any accredited lineworker school.
Christensen began work at SLV REC in 1963 following the death of his father, Edward. At that time, REC’s manager called him to see if he would return to the Valley to take his dad’s place. Christensen agreed and began work right away. In 1971 he became the south area serviceman; after 35 years of service, he retired in June 1998, although members continued to call him for the next several years. |

Dr. Nielsen is excited about the opportunity to have a chiropractic practice in Monte Vista and support the San Luis Valley.
Born and raised in a small town in Alberta, Canada, he enjoyed the proximity of the mountains for camping, hiking, fishing and many other outdoor activities. The San Luis Valley was an easy choice for relocation from the hustle and bustle of Phoenix, Arizona... even in the winters.
He has been in active practice for 33 years experiencing a variety of clinical settings. These include, group practice, private solo practice with several clinics, a Medical Group, University of Arizona Integrative Health Center provider, clinic director for his Alma Mater. Most enjoyment throughout his practice has been the direct patient interaction, direction and care.
Tailoring a program through a detailed history and examination is essential to help guide you back to regular activity. There are times however that additional evaluations and treatments are needed through the medical profession and Dr. Nielsen will help expedite a referral as needed.
Dr. Nielsen has an extensive knowledge in taking care of a wide variety of patients with conditions that mandate an intensive approach. This has occurred over the 33 years in practice. He continues to attend conferences on a wide ranging focus in order to stay on the cutting edge of best practice approaches. His goals of practice has always been to help restore function, mobility and movement so that patients may have the best quality of life available. Care can be as simple as an adjustment to an in depth evaluation of diet, nutrition, injuries, athletics and farming and ranching activities in order to improve a patient's' activity or restore and return them to their desired goals.

The Upper Rio Grande Animal Society (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit), is dedicated to providing a safe environment for the shelter and care of animals in need, and for the prevention of cruelty and abuse of all animals. It is our pledge to nourish the relationship between companion animals and humans through education, media exposure and readily available information and assistance.

ALL DOGS HAVE A STORY! Many of our dogs are homeless, abandoned, abused, neglected, lost, or relinquished by their owners. While each dog's story may be different, they all want an opportunity to love and be loved in a “furever” home. So far this year the shelter has taken in 228 dogs, found new homes for 105 and returned 108 to their owner. Donations and volunteers are always needed.

The Veterans Community Living Center at Homelake offers the following services:
- Nursing home: Our 60-bed long-term care skilled nursing home provides medical and non-medical care, including 24/7 registered nurse coverage, physical, occupational and speech therapy, social activities, and assistance with bathing, dressing and other activities of daily living.
- Domiciliary cottages (independent living with assistance): Our 48 domiciliary cottages are available for individuals who do not require 24-hour nursing care. Medical services are provided in an outpatient clinic 11 hours a day, with emergency medical care available through the nursing home.
- Short-term rehabilitation: Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies are available for individuals seeking to return home following a qualifying hospital stay. Therapy specialists work with each individual to regain skills and improve physical strength, endurance and aerobic capacity.
- Other services: We offer short-term respite care when home care providers or family members are unavailable, as well as end-of-life/hospice services. In addition, all residents receive individual care plans and have access to services from physicians, a social worker and veteran service officer. Residents also enjoy the convenience of their own post office, banking services, pool hall, chapel, expansive grounds and several indoor common areas.
